Far away and o'er the moor, Morar waits for a boat that saileth Far away, down lowland way, I dream the dream I learned, lad By the light of the peat fire flame, light for love, for lilt o grail deeds By the light of the peat fire flame, the light the hill-folk yearn for Far away, down lowland way, grim's the toil, without tune or dream, lad, All you need's a creel and love for the dream the heart can weave, lad, By the light of the peat fire flame, light for love, for lilt, for laughter By the light of the peat fire flame, the light the hill-folk yearn for Far away the tramp and tread, tune and laughter of all the heroes Pulls me onward o'er the trail of the dream my heart may weave, lad By the light of the peat fire flame, light for love, for lilt o grail deeds By the light of the peat fire flame, the light the hill-folk yearn for

about

These recordings were intended as demo mixes, culled from a few dozen sketches and rough drafts committed to four-track tape in 1995 and 1996. They lack finessed arrangements with nice breaks and complementary tunes, but I always felt there was a good feel to them. Unfortunately more polished versions of these arrangements were never recorded, and for the next decade I focused my energies on the experimental electronic music that The Foundry is known for, releasing more than three dozen albums and EPs since. This release was part of the initial plan for The Foundry as a label bridging genres and exploring different hybrid musics.

These tracks came to mind again recently when I received word of the death of an old friend. Kirsty (Karen) had been a long time friend with whom I had shared a lot music, and who had always been both helpful and encouraging of my efforts. She specifically found the lyrics I used for Peat Fire Flame here, as well as rounding out my info for a few other tracks not presented on this EP. I was happy that she had enjoyed the Salt Box cassette that I let out into the world back in 1996. I am releasing this digital EP now on Karen’s/Kirsty’s birthday as a way of honouring my friend’s memory and her contagious enthusiasm for music. The song goes ever on.

Thanks yous are owed to so many, from the great musicians with whom I’ve been lucky enough to play, to those whose work has been such a big influence on my eternally open ears. In terms of these recordings, I would particularly like to mention Gary Keep (who many years ago taught me to play the bodhran) and Karen (Kirsty) Fitch (for providing music, lyrics and enthusiasm) and offer them my gratitude. Additionally my friend Jeff Colburn (for much encouragement and the loan of his electric guitar) and Nathan Kreisberg, (my fellow resident of The Majestic and collaborator on so many other musical endeavours) deserve a lot of thank yous. These recordings would not have been made without the special patronage of Ellen Kreisberg, mistress of The Majestic.
