Port Klang EP

by Michael Bentley

Sundan Dream 02:13
Ring Edge 04:10

Port Klang was to be the soundtrack for a written piece I was working on in the mid/late 90s. The story was firmly planted in magical realism, set in an alternative present, and following a young man who flees California to lose himself in a mythic Pacifica. His first destination was to be Port Klang (the main gateway by sea into Malaysia, and located about 20 miles from Kuala Lumpur), and from there he would embark on an island hopping odyssey through Malaysia, Indonesia, and the South Pacific, encountering (among others) his grandfather, great Uncle and great Aunt along the way, and generally coming a bit unstuck in time. I was probably mashing up Joseph Conrad with Steve Erikson, in some sense. I composed a couple of songs, only one of which seems to have been recorded, and a bunch of instrumental numbers. I was hoping to combine the acoustic and electronic aspects more thoroughly in the finished versions, but here the tracks are either acoustic or electronic. I have sequenced the finished studio sketches (there are another several which were never completed) to vaguely represent the narrative arc I had in mind. Beyond giving you the taste of another "lost" project, I hope this EP provides you some listening pleasure.
