It happened at last Whitsuntide
I tired o' my place
Sae I gaed up tae Imsch tae fee
my fortune for tae chase
(chorus)
and sing irry irrity arry
and sing irry irrity an
I fell in wi' Adam Mitchell
and wi' him I did presume
he's a farmer up Kinnethmont way
at a place called Sleepy Toon
Says he if you'll agree wi' me
ye'll get the fairest play
for I never gar my servants work
mair nur ten hours a day
It was on a Monday mornin'
we gaed into Sleepy Toon
and he's ranked us in good order
for to lay his turnips doon
And the orders were to bed at six
and never leave the Toon
and for ilka time we left it
we'd be fined half-a-crown
Ah but we paid little heed to this
and often took the pass
sometimes to buy tobacco
and sometimes to court a lass
But now the term is roond again
and our wages we hae won
so we're awa' to Riny Meer
to rise us up some fun
And when we're ower in Alford
we'll gar the glass go roond a
nd we'll tell them o' the usage
that we had in Sleepy Toon
And maybe I'll see old Adam
a-suppin' at his brose
I'll gie him a len o' ma hanky
for to dicht his snotty nose

Far away and o'er the moor,
Morar waits for a boat that saileth
Far away, down lowland way,
I dream the dream I learned, lad
By the light of the peat fire flame, light for love, for lilt o grail deeds
By the light of the peat fire flame, the light the hill-folk yearn for
Far away, down lowland way,
grim's the toil, without tune or dream, lad,
All you need's a creel and love
for the dream the heart can weave, lad,
By the light of the peat fire flame, light for love, for lilt, for laughter
By the light of the peat fire flame, the light the hill-folk yearn for
Far away the tramp and tread,
tune and laughter of all the heroes
Pulls me onward o'er the trail
of the dream my heart may weave, lad
By the light of the peat fire flame, light for love, for lilt o grail deeds
By the light of the peat fire flame, the light the hill-folk yearn for

As I was walking all alane,
I heard twa corbies making mane,
the tane untae the other say-o,
"where shall we gang and dine the day?"
"In behint yon auld fail dyke,
I wot there lies a new slain knight;
and naebody kens that he lies there-o,
but his hawk, his hound and his lady fair
"His hawk is tae the hunting gane,
his hound to fetch the wild-fowl hame,
his lady's ta'en anther mate-o,
so we mav mak our dinner sweet
"Ye'll sit on his white hause-bane,
and I'll pike out his bonny blue een,
wi ae lock o his gowden hair-o
we'll theek our nest when it grows bare-o
"Mony's an ane for him maks mane,
but none shall ken where he is gane;
o'er his white banes, when they are bare-o,
the wind shall blaw for evermair"
