This "passing faire rounde" was learned from two recordings, one by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band and the other by The Consort of Musicke. It was written by Thomas Ravenscroft (c1582-c1635), a composer who published two collections of rounds, catches and light madrigals in the early seventeenth century. His repertoire was filled with a wide variety of musical styles, like this round, or the folk-ballad stylings of There Were Three Ravens (combined, in instrumental form, on the last track with the Scottish Twa Corbies), in addition to the "higher art" of sacred motets and fantasias. This was my first serious attempt at multiple part harmonies. It is truly odd to listen to an ensemble of one's self singing together!
