about

These are two of my favourite pieces, done at somewhat different times but both bringing together a really wide range of techniques. This World is both a commentary on the state of the world during the time of it's composition and a meditation on more timeless themes. I performed this piece on the Foundry tour with its accompanying video, which I hope to make available soon. Import offers up a somewhat more focused approach, being shorter (constructed from one minute tracks), revealing various meanings of the word import and honouring the memory of my grandmother, who died during the composition of the piece. Import was originally released as part of the seminal invalidObject Series from Irish label Fällt. - Michael Bentley

From the Press release:
This World gracefully integrates M. Bentley's various approaches to sound design and composition. The suites Chronos & Kairos and Import are related thematically and conceptually - extended audio snapshots, sonic gestures towards narrative and story-telling. In one sense this is programme music for the 21st century, or perhaps a soundtrack for memoirs never written.

Reviews:

"Even without the images it's already a strong work, but with it (The Foundry is planning a DVD release), I'm sure it will be even stronger. A very fine work." Frans de Waard, Vital newsletter

"Both suites seek to invoke in the listener a sonic space outside of their normal range: whether it be the expansive infinity to be found in the daily cycle of our lives with Chronos & Kairos or the multi-pathed possibilities of our surrounding that make up the body of Import. In both cases, Bentley succeeds admirably." Mark Teppo, Igloo Magazine

"Gritty, soothing, eerie, antiseptic, bionomic and sometimes minimalistic to the point of dissolving, This World is an interactive ambient experience which will be regarded as completely unique with each encounter." Chuck van Zyl, STAR'S END
