The Unconscious Mirroring Of Particles

from Miscellany by Michael Bentley

/

about

The oldest track in this collection, at least as defined by composition date. The Unconscious Mirroring Of Particles (TUMOP) began as an experiment in composing fragments that would interact nicely with each other when randomly triggered via MIDI. The concept was not dissimilar to Jonathan Hughes' Fluidities project, which had been designed so that any track could be played simultaneously with any other track to create new compositions. In this case the elements all resided in a single composition, but the idea was much the same. The randomly generated track interaction was a musical nod to the idea of quantum fluctuations, the spontaneous creation of particle-antiparticle pairs suggested by the track title. I returned to this piece a number of times between 1995 and 2003, and this version was most likely recorded in 2000 or 2001.
