about

Miscellany brings together recordings from a very important and productive period in Michael Bentley's musical career, much of it unreleased, and most of it unfamiliar. The work here includes the purely electronic and the electro-acoustic, and fits under the general rubric of ambient.

"In revisiting the pieces that form this album, I was struck by how some ideas that appeared early on, and then reappeared later in an interestingly different form," Michael Bentley writes. "I think that these tracks do successfully distill a huge a portion of my style and approach, while not sounding exactly like other albums. Hearing the acoustic guitar in one of the earlier tracks (Flora) kind of echoes the use of wooden flute on a later track (Melancholy). The noodling ambience of Midsummer's Eve very much carries on, in a different way, the semi-random mash-up of The Unconscious Mirroring Of Particles. It makes me smile to see these commonalities, and with the perspective of time, see how I was trying to explore permutations of certain ideas."

This collection includes material from the early period of The Foundry as a music label, and covers a period of about eight years. Five of these tracks are previously unreleased, and another three appeared on the long out-of-print Eclectronica compilation. The remaining three tracks appeared on other compilations. Specific notes are available on each track's page.

Miscellany is part the 2020 series of Foundry Archival releases, made available exclusively through Bandcamp.
