Bill Merrill An engrossing collection of primal chants with flutes, percussion, and various sounds mixed in. There’s a very ancient & organic feeling with this music. Favorite track: Circle (acoustic sketch).

about

"Even now, despite the passing of years, it is difficult to write about this project. Among other things, there’s too much to say, and it is hard to know where to start."

So begins the liner notes for this Foundry archival release, A.D., the long lost second album from The Apiary. Never finished, with elements put to tape more than two decades ago, this release brings together all the material Michael Bentley recorded, along with extensive liner notes and photos included in your purchase as a downloadable PDF. The 23 tracks cover the original acoustic sessions, as well as the later electro-acoustic sessions.

"Why return to A.D. now? Put simply, I never forgot about it. These recordings are important to me, and the process of making them was transformative. The time I spent working on A.D. has informed everything else I’ve done musically since."

The material is personal and engrossing, spanning different styles and moods. A.D. is a fascinating statement from an artist who has demonstrated an abundance of ideas over his many releases, and here reveals hitherto unknown aspects of his work to great effect.

All instruments and voices performed by Michael Bentley, with following exceptions: Charles Browning juggled the egg shakers on Flutter, and his voice appears in very altered form on track 21 or 22. Susan Worland played violin and bells on Hunting the Wren.

Downloadable PDF designed and written by Michael Bentley, and is included with your purchase.

Unending thank yous are due to Charles for his friendship and collaboration through the years, and to Susan for her love, and patience with my obsessions.

This collection is, of course, dedicated to my mother.
